Spurs’ Squad Lacks Depth
Tottenham Hotspur’s squad remains remarkably thin in key areas, particularly within their defensive line.
This was highlighted during the Carabao Cup match against Manchester City, where manager Ange Postecoglou had to field both Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven. Unfortunately, van de Ven was substituted in the first half due to a hamstring injury.
Despite Radu Dragusin’s commendable performance in the 2-1 victory over City, Postecoglou’s side faces significant challenges if either Dragusin or Romero sustains an injury.
Mick Brown has identified this as a major concern for Spurs.
He noted that the lack of depth is currently their most pressing issue and mentioned that the club is considering acquiring an additional central defender in the summer.
In an interview with Football Insider, Brown expressed his worries about Tottenham’s defensive capabilities, stating, “Tottenham worry me defensively.
They struggle with the fundamentals; their defense is just not good enough, even with their best players on the pitch.”
He emphasized that the team’s limited options complicate player rotation, which is crucial for success.
“All the top teams have dependable defensive units,” he added.
He cited Arsenal as an example, pointing out that their title challenge is significantly bolstered by a robust defense.
He praised Gabriel and Saliba for their reliability.
Brown also referenced Manchester City, highlighting their defensive strength with players like Dias, Akanji, and Gvardiol, despite the focus often being on their attacking prowess.
Currently, Tottenham has a stable defensive pairing in Romero and van de Ven, but the lack of quality alternatives behind them is concerning.
According to Brown, the club is actively looking for someone capable of stepping in should either player be unavailable.
With van de Ven’s latest injury underscoring the situation, it’s apparent he has a chronic hamstring issue.
Given the significance of his recovery for Spurs’ defensive setup, Postecoglou may prioritize securing a fast left-footed center-back when the transfer window reopens in January.
