Gary Lineker has officially announced his departure from the BBC, confirming he will step down as host of Match of the Day.

Describing the decision as “the responsible course of action,” Lineker’s exit follows increasing pressure on the broadcaster to act after controversy surrounding one of his social media posts.

Having presented Match of the Day for 26 years, the former England striker faced intense backlash after he posted a pro-Palestinian video on Instagram earlier this week.

The video, shared by the campaign group Palestine Lobby, featured a rat emoji widely interpreted as anti-Semitic. Lineker promptly deleted the post and issued a public apology.

Though he was already set to step down as Match of the Day host at the end of the current Premier League season, Lineker had previously planned to continue presenting the FA Cup and the 2026 World Cup.

Following the controversy, however, he has chosen to bring an end to his long-standing relationship with the BBC entirely, with his final appearance scheduled for Sunday, May 25.

In a statement, Lineker said, “Football has been central to my life, both as a player and a broadcaster.

I care deeply about the sport and the work I’ve done with the BBC over many years. I would never knowingly share anything anti-Semitic — that is fundamentally against my values.

I accept full responsibility for this mistake and deeply regret the offense caused. The image in question does not represent my views. Stepping back now feels like the right thing to do.”

BBC Director General Tim Davie commented on the situation, stating, “Gary has taken accountability for his mistake. As a result, we have mutually agreed that he will step away from presenting after this season.

Over more than two decades, Gary has been a prominent and respected voice in our football coverage.

His passion, insight, and experience have significantly shaped BBC Sport. We are immensely grateful for his contributions.”

Lineker’s outspoken stance on the Israel-Gaza conflict has made headlines before, but the latest controversy proved to be the tipping point.

Despite the apology, public and internal pressure prompted a swifter departure than initially anticipated.

In January, the BBC announced that Kelly Cates, Mark Chapman, and Gabby Logan will take over Match of the Day hosting duties.

All three are seasoned BBC presenters and are expected to share responsibilities going forward.
