Alphonse Areola’s future at West Ham has become increasingly uncertain in recent weeks as Graham Potter continues reshaping his squad at the London Stadium.

Despite the speculation, the French goalkeeper was handed a start in the Carabao Cup clash against Wolves, a game that ended in yet another disappointment for the Irons.

That result marked their third straight defeat across all competitions, further adding to the growing sense of unease around the club.

Areola’s situation has not been helped by the summer arrival of Mads Hermansen from Leicester City.

The Danish shot-stopper was immediately installed as West Ham’s new number one, pushing the 32-year-old further down the pecking order.

With the transfer window closing at 7pm on 1 September, the former Paris Saint-Germain man is now believed to be weighing up a late move away from East London in search of more consistent opportunities.

Earlier in the window, West Ham had shown intent to strengthen their goalkeeping department by tabling a £6.9million bid for Botafogo’s John Victor.

That deal eventually collapsed, and instead, the Hammers completed a move for Hermansen. However, some already view that decision as questionable given the Dane’s early struggles in claret and blue.

Currently, Potter has four senior keepers at his disposal: Hermansen, Areola, Wes Foderingham, and young prospect Krisztian Hegyi.

Yet, with Areola pushed to a backup role, former West Ham midfielder and coach Martin Allen believes a parting of ways now looks inevitable.

Speaking exclusively to West Ham Zone, Allen said:

“I’m sure Areola is looking to get away. He’s had his chance, and there were several moments that weren’t good enough.

He’s been replaced, he’s no longer first choice, and after experiencing regular football last season, he’ll want a fresh start elsewhere.

I can completely understand it. The problem is whether West Ham can actually afford to recruit another goalkeeper, especially with pressing needs in defence and attack.”

Meanwhile, the Irons could yet revive their interest in John Victor. Although initially overlooked in favour of Hermansen, the Brazilian could still emerge as a target before the deadline.

The obstacle for West Ham is that Nottingham Forest have already stepped up their pursuit of the 29-year-old. Even so, a late approach from East London may still tempt him to consider a Premier League move to the capital.

If West Ham were to bring in Victor at the eleventh hour, it would almost certainly pave the way for Areola’s departure, as his game time looks set to diminish further in the coming weeks.
