Didi Hamann has raised concerns for Gareth Southgate regarding Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, labeling him a potential “big worry” for England during Euro 2024.
Pickford, the Three Lions’ first-choice keeper, is set to start their initial group match against Serbia on Sunday, 16 June, in Germany. Despite having a stellar season under Sean Dyche at Goodison Park and earning acclaim from both pundits and fans, Hamann suggests the 30-year-old may prove detrimental to England’s campaign this summer.
During a talkSPORT segment on Thursday, 13 June, Hamann commented, “You will have setbacks in a tournament, and you need somebody who calms the team down. When I observe his behavior for Everton, he often comes storming out, criticizing his defenders and midfielders when they make mistakes.
“That’s his job, to save the ball, which is why he’s there and why he’s paid. I think he only gets away with this behavior because he plays for Everton. If he were at a more successful club, I don’t think the players would tolerate this.
“A calm keeper provides reassurance that if you make a mistake in defense or midfield, he’s there to support you. By doing so, you can potentially prevent one or two chances for the opposition, which doesn’t seem to be the case with him.
“For me, the England keeper is a big worry.”
Criticism of Pickford often centers on his perceived emotional volatility on the pitch. However, this critique has become outdated as he has significantly matured in recent years, both domestically and internationally.
His performances for Everton have been on par with the best goalkeepers in the Premier League. While his success has been aided by a strong defense, Pickford himself has made numerous remarkable saves.
Hamann’s criticisms may have held more weight a year or 18 months ago, but the current Pickford is a well-rounded goalkeeper capable of leading a team to victory in a major tournament.
If he succeeds this summer, it could help dispel doubts about his capabilities. However, Everton fans might worry that exceptional performances could attract interest from other clubs, potentially leading to his departure from Merseyside.
