‘Here We Go’ – Bayern Munich’s £42m Deal Opens Path for Everton Star

Everton transfer news: The German giants have figured out a solution to their midfield problem.

As Bayern Munich nears the completion of their move for Fulham midfielder Joao Palhinha, Everton fans can breathe a sigh of relief as Amadou Onana is no longer a target.

The Belgian midfielder was one of his country’s standout performers at Euro 2024, despite their disappointing exit. He excelled in a lone defensive midfield role, demonstrating his ability to compete at the highest level. Last season, Onana showed significant growth and improvement in his second full campaign in England, attracting interest from several top clubs.

Manchester United, Arsenal, Barcelona, and Bayern Munich were among the clubs eyeing him. However, interest in Onana has cooled, which means Everton can likely retain one of their best players. According to Fabrizio Romano, Bayern has sealed a £42m deal with £4m in add-ons for Palhinha. Romano wrote on X: “João Palhinha to Bayern, here we go! Deal approved on fee around €50m plus €5m add-ons. Palhinha will sign a contract until 2028 at Bayern, he’s been pushing for weeks for the deal to happen. Medical to be booked then docs to be signed. Story confirmed.”

With Bayern addressing their need for a defensive midfielder, Everton can be more confident about keeping Onana. Near the end of the season, Onana had the best defensive duel percentage across Europe’s top five leagues, showcasing the hard work Sean Dyche has put into improving his defensive positioning.

However, Onana has hinted at a future away from Goodison Park. Speaking to Het Laatste Nieuws, he said: “At previous tournaments, you have seen that the players who did well make the step up to the top clubs. That’s something I strive for. I feel like presenting myself to the European top and showing what I have to offer. This European Championship is a stage.”

While it remains to be seen if Everton will part ways with Onana this summer, they are not financially compelled to sell. This means he can remain a central figure for Dyche’s new-look side, which has already made three new signings. His long-term future may lie elsewhere, but for now, he remains an Everton player.
