Dermot Gallagher claims James Tarkowski was "fortunate" to avoid giving away a penalty in Everton's clash with Crystal Palace.
In an appearance on Sky Sports News’ Ref Watch (30 September), former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher discussed James Tarkowski’s tackle on Jean-Philippe Mateta, stating that it made enough contact to justify a penalty.
Despite a VAR review, on-field referee Andy Madley stood by his decision not to award a foul, allowing Tarkowski and his Everton teammates to overturn a halftime deficit and secure a 2-1 win at Goodison Park.
Gallagher explained, “I think Tarkowski is fortunate because he jumps in and eventually gets the ball.
He does get some of the ball, no doubt, but he also makes enough contact with the man, in my opinion.
“This is a decision that will divide people. I thought it was a penalty—I was watching the game with another referee on Saturday, and he disagreed. It’s a tough call, but for me, it was a penalty.”
Tarkowski and Everton caught a break to secure their first league victory.
If the Toffees had entered halftime 2-0 down against Crystal Palace, and Tarkowski, one of their key defenders, had been sent off, the situation at Goodison Park would have looked grim.
The return of Jarrad Branthwaite from injury was a positive before the game, but the 22-year-old might have faced a difficult second half if Tarkowski’s tackle had resulted in a red card.
However, with Tarkowski escaping further punishment, Everton had the chance to rally in the second half.
Dwight McNeil’s two goals turned the tide in their favor.
The final whistle relieved some pressure from manager Sean Dyche, and Tarkowski will be thankful his reckless challenge didn’t cost the team.
A first league win, Branthwaite’s return, and the looming takeover by Dan Friedkin mark a positive week for the blue side of Merseyside, with Tarkowski fortunate to have contributed.
