West Ham United climbed out of the Premier League relegation zone for the first time since December after securing a hard-fought draw against title contenders Manchester City at the London Stadium on Saturday.

It was a resilient performance from West Ham United, who managed to frustrate one of the league’s most dominant sides and earn a valuable point in their fight for survival.

City took the lead in the 31st minute through Bernardo Silva, who finished calmly to give the visitors the advantage. However, West Ham responded quickly and found an equaliser just four minutes later.

Defender Konstantinos Mavropanos rose highest in the box to power home a towering header, bringing the Hammers level and reigniting the home crowd.

Despite the result, the match statistics painted a clear picture of City’s dominance. The visitors registered 24 shots compared to West Ham’s solitary attempt, while also controlling 71.5 per cent of possession.

In terms of expected goals, City recorded 2.12, significantly higher than West Ham’s 0.54.

Several players delivered standout performances for West Ham manager Nuno Espirito Santo, with left wing-back El Hadji Malick Diouf particularly impressive.

The Senegalese youngster started once again on the left flank and played a crucial role in helping his side secure a valuable point.

Although West Ham spent long periods defending due to City’s pressure, Diouf remained disciplined and effective throughout the contest.

Beyond his defensive work, Diouf also showed flashes of attacking promise.

Diouf joined the club from Slavia Prague in July for a reported £19 million fee, and he has steadily grown into an important member of the squad.

Interestingly, by November the Senegal international had already spoken openly about his long-term ambitions in football.

At the time, he explained that his ultimate dream is to play for one of the biggest clubs in the world. Diouf stated that he believes he has the ability to reach a top-five club globally through dedication and continued improvement.

However, he also acknowledged that patience is necessary, given that he has only been playing professional football for around two years.

If his development continues at this pace, it would not be surprising to see elite clubs monitoring his progress in the near future.

Another key factor in West Ham’s recent improvement has been the form of goalkeeper Mads Hermansen.

The Danish shot-stopper arrived last summer from Leicester City but initially lost his place after a difficult start to the campaign, with Alphonse Areola stepping in as first choice.

However, Hermansen regained his place in early February and has since played a vital role in West Ham’s resurgence.

In his last six league matches, the 25-year-old has kept two clean sheets and helped the team collect nine points while suffering just one defeat.

Against City, Hermansen produced another outstanding display, making five crucial saves. His highlight moment came when he denied Erling Haaland in a tense one-on-one situation, preserving the draw for his side.

With eight games remaining this season, West Ham appear increasingly capable of avoiding relegation to the EFL Championship.

Under Nuno’s leadership, they have begun to gather momentum and are now closing the gap on teams such as Tottenham Hotspur and Leeds United, while already moving ahead of Nottingham Forest.

If Hermansen maintains his strong performances and Diouf continues his rapid development, West Ham may well have the key ingredients required to secure their Premier League status this season.
