As Newcastle United edge closer to securing the signing of Anthony Elanga, manager Eddie Howe is already planning his next strategic move in the summer transfer market.

Although a formal agreement with Nottingham Forest has yet to be finalised, Newcastle are believed to have submitted a second bid in the region of £55 million.

Talks are ongoing, and a breakthrough appears to be close, potentially securing one of the club’s top transfer targets this window.

Elanga, who enjoyed an impressive campaign last season, could soon form part of a lightning-fast attacking trio alongside Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon.

On paper, such a frontline would give Premier League defences plenty to fear. And with Champions League football once again on the calendar, Newcastle need to strengthen their squad beyond just this signing.

Last season’s European campaign exposed a lack of depth in the squad — a mistake Howe will be keen to avoid repeating.

This time, Newcastle’s owners PIF are reportedly in a stronger financial position and free of Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) constraints.

Howe targets “smart” move for Bakayoko

According to Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke, Eddie Howe is personally pushing for a deal to sign PSV Eindhoven winger Johan Bakayoko.

The Belgian international is reportedly open to a move, particularly to a club offering Champions League football.

Speaking to Football Insider, O’Rourke said: “Bakayoko I’m sure would probably be interested in a move if it was the right offer.

He wants to be playing at the highest level, which Newcastle can offer with Champions League football.

“With his contract entering its final year, he could be far more affordable than other wingers, making him a very smart signing for Eddie Howe.”

Valued at around £40 million, Bakayoko could prove a bargain considering his consistent performances and end product.

If Newcastle manage to bring both Elanga and Bakayoko to Tyneside, Howe would suddenly have two explosive wide options in his ranks.

In a season where squad rotation will be essential, adding both wingers would significantly boost Newcastle’s depth and attacking threat.
