“‘Huge Coup’ – Pundit Assesses Leeds’ Chances of Signing Left-Back, Urges Player to Be Sensible”
Carlton Palmer says landing Archie Brown over Chelsea and Tottenham would be a “huge coup” for Leeds United.
Leeds United have shown interest in signing left-back Archie Brown, who has also attracted attention from several Premier League clubs, including Tottenham, West Ham, and Chelsea.
Despite this competition, Leeds hopes to bring Brown to Elland Road, particularly if they can secure promotion to the Premier League.
Former player Carlton Palmer has encouraged Brown to be “sensible” about his next move, advising him to prioritize a club where he can secure regular playing time, potentially giving Leeds an edge.
Palmer told Football League World on November 14, “Leeds pursued him in 2023 but couldn’t land him, so it’s clear they are strong admirers.
However, they may need to be in the Premier League to secure his signature.”
Palmer added, “If the player is smart, he’ll look at the clubs showing interest and consider his chances of starting regularly.
Leeds could be appealing if he wants consistent first-team action.”
He suggested that Leeds could offer Brown a better chance at regular playtime than top-flight clubs like Tottenham, West Ham, or Chelsea, where breaking into the starting lineup might be tougher.
Palmer further noted that Brown’s experience in Switzerland and Belgium, where he sought consistent playtime, could make Leeds an attractive option.
“It would be a significant signing for Leeds if they could make it happen,” he continued.
“With the opportunity to play now and Leeds’ current trajectory, they could secure promotion and close the deal.”
The need for a new left-back at Leeds has intensified, especially with Junior Firpo nearing the end of his contract at Elland Road.
An extension for Firpo seems unlikely, which has heightened Leeds’ interest in strengthening this position.
However, Leeds is more likely to pursue Brown in the summer transfer window, rather than January, depending on their promotion status.
Landing Brown would be a significant move for Leeds, as Palmer hinted, especially if they secure promotion and enter the competitive arena for his signature.
The young left-back has made considerable progress since his early days at Derby County.
After joining Swiss club Lausanne-Sport in 2021, Brown moved to Belgian side Gent for the 2023-24 season.
At Gent, the 22-year-old has excelled, registering two goals and four assists across 23 games in various competitions.
His impressive performance in the Belgian Pro League has increased his value, making him a desirable prospect for both Leeds United and top-tier Premier League clubs.
