Former Hull City manager Steve Bruce believes it could take a bid in excess of £20 million to lure Jacob Greaves away from the MKM Stadium this summer.
Bruce, who notably led Hull City to two promotions to the Premier League, an FA Cup final, and a brief European stint, sees Greaves’ impressive form last season—culminating in numerous awards and a place in the Team of the Season—as a reason for such a valuation in the current market.
Hull City is reluctant to sell one of their key assets this summer, but due to Financial Fair Play considerations, owner Acun Ilicali anticipates firm interest from clubs like West Ham, Everton, and Nottingham Forest to materialize into solid offers.
City will only consider selling Greaves, or any player, if they request to leave, but Bruce believes the club is in a strong position to demand a substantial fee.
“Can he improve on this season? If he’s played 50 games, won Player of the Season, and been named in the Championship’s Team of the Season, then naturally, every player wants to reach the highest level. He must see a big opportunity here because left-sided defenders are rare.
“We produce many number 10s and wide players, but not many pure left-footed center-backs. For example, England had to play (Kieran) Trippier on the left side against Serbia. A natural left-footer for team balance is invaluable.
“There’s bound to be interest, and it’ll be tough for him to turn down because everyone wants to play in the Premier League.
“Consider (Jarrad) Branthwaite, who’s valued at £45 million now. He was at Carlisle, then went to Everton for just £1.5m or £2m and has flourished in the Premier League. Greaves hasn’t yet played in the Premier League, so it will probably take a bid north of £20 million to even start a conversation.”
Though Bruce finds Liam Rosenior’s recent sacking to be the harshest dismissal of the summer, he acknowledges the significant opportunity Tim Walter has to shape the squad from the beginning of pre-season, especially with many players needed in the transfer market.
“There’s nothing better for a manager than having time and some funds to invest in building your own team. That was my situation at Hull City.
“When I took over from Nick Barmby, they had finished eighth, but some work was needed. We had to beg, borrow, and steal to put our own stamp on it. With some resources at his disposal, Walter has a great chance to construct his own team from scratch.”
