Pierre Ekwah was strongly linked with Rangers towards the end of the summer transfer window, despite having only just completed a permanent move from Sunderland to Saint-Etienne.
However, a remarkable twist in his contract situation with the French Ligue 2 side could now see him declared a free agent, potentially paving the way for Rangers to step in and secure his signature.
The move to Ibrox is possible, though several major obstacles must be overcome before it can materialise.
Ekwah’s contract dispute with Saint-Etienne
The midfielder officially joined Saint-Etienne on August 14 after a loan spell at the club last season.
But reports emerging in France suggest that his status is now in limbo following a contract disagreement.
According to Peuple Vert, Ekwah may even find himself at the centre of a protracted legal battle which could last years.
Saint-Etienne are believed to have triggered a purchase option following his loan, yet they allegedly did so without the player’s consent.
After rejecting multiple offers for him during the summer, the French side saw Ekwah’s representatives take the drastic step of terminating his contract unilaterally.
His camp intends to rely on the precedent set by Lassana Diarra, the former Real Madrid midfielder who won a landmark ruling after terminating his deal with Lokomotiv Moscow.
That case, however, dragged on for nearly a decade, and a similar drawn-out legal fight could jeopardise Rangers’ hopes of adding Ekwah to their ranks in the short term.
Saint-Etienne, who invested significant money into the player, are adamant that they will not lose him without resistance.
The club maintains that contracts cannot be broken so easily, and they will likely contest the matter vigorously.
A potential coup for Rangers
If Rangers can somehow navigate the situation and bring Ekwah to Glasgow, it would represent a major coup, especially with La Liga outfit Levante also monitoring developments.
Russell Martin’s midfield has lacked drive and energy at times this season, with Thelo Aasgaard and Joe Rothwell struggling to make the desired impact.
Ekwah, once hailed as a “major asset” by former Sunderland teammate Aimen Moueffek, would inject much-needed intensity and presence.
