Despite impressing during pre-season following his move from Marseille, Ismaïla Ndiaye was not chosen to start against the lone striker, Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
Instead, Abdoulaye Doucoure was selected, continuing his role in the support striker position that he has excelled in under manager Sean Dyche.
Thomas commented on the team selection, noting, “Doucoure’s choice over Harrison and Ndiaye—who have both played in the support striker role during pre-season—could be a tactical decision.
Doucoure may offer more defensive support to Iroegbunam and Gueye, or it might be a message to Ndiaye that he needs to prove himself.”
Ndiaye, who joined Everton from Sheffield United, will need to work hard to secure a regular spot in Dyche’s lineup.
Dyche values familiarity and rewards players who perform well, which explains Doucoure’s continued presence in the starting eleven.
While Doucoure’s performance makes him a likely starter if fit, Ndiaye is not necessarily doomed to a bench role. He might need to be patient and take advantage of his opportunities when they arise.
Dyche could also be experimenting with different options during pre-season, and only he knows the full extent of his plans.
Having multiple options is beneficial for the team, and by the end of August, Dyche may face even more selection dilemmas as he continues to evaluate his squad.
