Eddie Howe has hailed Dan Burn as one of Newcastle United’s smartest signings, suggesting the defender was probably worth closer to £30 million rather than the £13 million the club paid Brighton for him in 2022.

Howe praises Burn’s impact and value

Ahead of Newcastle’s trip to Burn’s former club Brighton, Howe was asked if the 31-year-old had proved to be worth his modest transfer fee. Smiling, the Magpies boss replied:

“I thought you said £30m then — that’s why I paused. I thought, ‘Gosh, that’s lumpy!’ But in truth, he probably was worth that when you look at his value for money and what he’s given the club.

“When we brought him in, it was a crucial signing. We needed leadership, experience, and a winning mentality at a time when we were in a relegation battle. He had strong links to the area and wanted to come home, which made it even better.

“It turned out to be an incredible transfer. He’s been worth every penny — and then some — for everything he’s done and continues to do. He’s a genuinely inspiring character, and I’m delighted to see him rewarded at international level.

It’s great when good people and strong characters get that recognition. Now he just has to keep pushing to see what more he can achieve.”

Burn returned from England duty full of motivation, hoping to be part of next summer’s World Cup squad, but he now faces a demanding run of fixtures as Newcastle play seven matches in just 23 days before the next international break.

Howe provides injury update

Howe also discussed team news, welcoming Ross Wilson’s arrival as Newcastle’s new sporting director and offering updates on several injured players.

Midfielder Jacob Ramsey could return after recovering from an ankle injury, while Joelinton is expected to be available despite a minor groin issue sustained while on international duty with Brazil.

However, full-backs Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall remain sidelined, as does striker Yoane Wissa, who is still recovering from posterior cruciate ligament damage.

Joe Willock will be included in the squad, despite being the subject of an online hoax claiming he was lost in York Maze for six hours.

Asked about the bizarre rumour, Howe laughed: “Yes, I spoke to him — just to make sure it wasn’t true, like everyone else! Thankfully it wasn’t. Joe’s fine and has been able to see the funny side rather than be bothered by it.”
