Josh Windass Confirms Santos Interest and Potential Rangers Reunion
In the 2017/18 season, Pedro Caixinha assembled a disjointed squad but struck gold with Morelos.
Among those inherited was Windass, a promising yet injury-prone forward signed by Mark Warburton.
Windass managed 13 goals and eight assists in 33 league appearances that season, standing out in an otherwise disappointing campaign.
Now, Windass could potentially reunite with both Caixinha and Morelos if Santos can lure him to Brazil.
Speaking on Talksport on January 5, the 30-year-old, whose Sheffield Wednesday contract expires at the end of the season, addressed the rumors:
“I used to work with him [Caixinha],” Windass said. “It came as a surprise this morning when my agent called me.
Obviously, when your contract is up, there’s always talk. I haven’t spoken to Pedro in a long time, but when you’re in form, these things happen.”
Could Rangers Consider Bringing Windass Back?
Windass is not a traditional winger or No.10 but is currently in excellent form for Sheffield Wednesday.
When he left Rangers, it was reported that he wanted to play centrally as a striker, while Gerrard preferred him as a wide player in a system featuring dual No.10s.
Now, under Philippe Clement, Windass could fit seamlessly into the team, either in an attacking midfield role or as a second striker—positions utilized when Hamza Igamane and Danilo play together.
Given he could be available on a free transfer, players with a similar profile would undoubtedly be considered.
Windass has previously been linked with a loan move back to Rangers, and this might be a realistic option.
To put it another way, if Rangers had to choose between Windass or Cyril Dessers as the third attacking option in the squad, Windass might present the more compelling case.
