Opinion: West Ham could hand Potter the next Paqueta with move for teenage sensation

West Ham United may be preparing to part ways with Brazil international Lucas Paquetá in the near future, as the midfielder awaits trial over alleged spot-fixing charges.

The 27-year-old could face a lifetime ban if found guilty, though a verdict is not expected until the summer.

With that uncertainty looming large, manager Graham Potter may turn to the transfer market to secure a potential replacement ahead of time.

In light of the disappointing early season performance under Tim Steidten and Julen Lopetegui, the Hammers will be eager to make their upcoming transfer window count.

One potential signing who could kickstart a summer rebuild is Sunderland’s Chris Rigg.

According to The Guardian (25 March), West Ham are targeting the 17-year-old midfielder, who has impressed not only Potter and his coaching team but also the club’s recruitment staff.

Tottenham Hotspur have also been monitoring Rigg’s progress, but it’s believed that West Ham are currently in a stronger position to secure the talented youngster’s signature.

Rigg could be a fitting replacement for Paquetá, as the England U19 international shows a similar playing profile.

The Sunderland midfielder excels in progressive carries, successful take-ons, and receiving progressive passes—metrics in which he even surpasses Paquetá.

While the Brazilian does offer superior output in certain areas, Rigg’s numbers are remarkable, especially considering his age, lower league experience, and the team he’s playing for.

Under the guidance of Potter and with Premier League exposure, Rigg could flourish into a top-tier attacking midfielder for the East London club.

His technical ability, vision, and drive suggest he could fill the void left by Paquetá, should the Brazilian be forced out due to disciplinary outcomes.

Rigg’s performances in the Championship have been nothing short of exceptional.

Despite being only 17, he has already amassed 65 appearances for Sunderland, and has played a key role in their push for promotion via the playoffs.

Regardless of whether the Black Cats reach the Premier League, Rigg may find himself in the top flight next season if West Ham follow through with their interest.

It remains to be seen if he can handle the jump in competition—but given his trajectory, he may well become a key figure at the London Stadium.
