Jake Evans must prove himself in Leicester City’s Under-21 side before earning a first-team chance, manager Marti Cifuentes has said, as the young forward continues his impressive scoring form.

The 17-year-old was tipped for greater senior involvement this season following Leicester’s relegation, especially after making several substitute appearances last term.

During the final weeks of Ruud van Nistelrooy’s reign, Evans was regularly named among the substitutes alongside Jeremy Monga.

However, while Monga has since broken into Cifuentes’ first team, Evans has yet to make a senior matchday squad.

Last season, Evans netted 11 goals in Premier League 2, becoming the youngest player at any club to reach double figures since the league’s revamp a decade ago.

He has carried that momentum into the new campaign, scoring in each of his last three Premier League 2 matches.

“It’s good that we have expectations for young players,” Cifuentes said. “Every player has their own development path.

Jake trained with us throughout pre-season and continues to work closely with the first team.

We believe in his qualities. It’s now about him showing what we want to see in the Under-21s — then opportunities will come.”

Although Evans has often played on the right wing, his recent goals have come while operating as a central striker.

Competition for places remains fierce, with Patson Daka, Jordan Ayew, and Julian Carranza leading the senior attack, while Silko Thomas and Wanya Marcal are currently preferred options out wide.

Even so, time is on Evans’ side. At just 17, he is still at an early stage in his development, and Monga’s rapid rise has perhaps raised unrealistic expectations.

Having turned 17 in late August, Evans is now eligible to sign a professional contract with Leicester, and reports over the summer suggested a deal was close, though official confirmation has yet to emerge.
