Jamie Carragher revealed he turned down a final contract offer from Liverpool because he didn’t want to disappoint the fans—but admitted he would have accepted it had he been playing for a different club like Newcastle United.

As his career at Anfield neared its end, Carragher was offered a one-year extension in 2013.

At 35 years old, however, the former England international chose to retire, feeling he could no longer perform at the level expected by Liverpool supporters.

Speaking to Sky Sports, the Reds legend explained, “I wanted to be a one-club man. That was always my goal.

But I often thought, ‘How do you leave Liverpool?’ If you go somewhere better, the fans won’t like it because to them, nothing tops Liverpool.”

He continued, “Once I decided to stay, it became a question of when to leave. I was offered another year, but I turned it down because I was a local lad playing for Liverpool.

I didn’t want to upset the fans. I didn’t feel I was good enough to play 25 or 30 games a season anymore.

I just thought, ‘I’ve got to go.’ I couldn’t bear the idea of fans showing up and thinking, ‘Oh no, Jamie Carragher is playing today.’ I didn’t want that reaction.”

Carragher acknowledged things might have been different had he been at another club. “If I’d been at Aston Villa, Tottenham, Newcastle, or anywhere else in the Premier League, I’d have signed for another year,” he admitted.

“I would’ve made that decision for myself, not the fans. But at Liverpool, I just couldn’t do that.”
