Gary Lineker jokingly suggested that Leicester City’s greatest-ever player is a toss-up between Jamie Vardy and Emile Heskey.

Vardy scored his 199th goal for Leicester on Saturday, helping secure a 2-0 win over already-relegated Southampton — the club’s first victory since January.

With three games remaining before his contract ends in June, the 37-year-old striker still has time to hit the 200-goal mark and end his 13-year spell at the club on a high.

Leicester manager Ruud van Nistelrooy praised Vardy post-match, calling him the club’s “most successful player” — regardless of whether he reaches the 200-goal milestone.

That comment was put to Vardy by Lineker during a slightly awkward yet humorous exchange on Match of the Day.

Lineker said: “I just heard your manager, Ruud van Nistelrooy, saying that you’re Leicester’s greatest ever player. I think a lot of fans would agree with that.”

With a grin, Vardy replied, “Even you?”

When Lineker asked if refereeing could be a future career option, Vardy laughed: “Nah.

As for what lies ahead after this season, Vardy remained uncertain: “I couldn’t tell you at this moment in time. I’m just enjoying my football as much as I can.
