“Major Risk” – Journalist cautions Everton against January transfer decision
Ian Croll argues that Everton would be taking a "huge risk" by letting go of Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the January transfer window.
The future of Everton’s 27-year-old striker has been a hot topic recently, with several clubs showing interest in acquiring him in the near future (TEAMtalk, 25 October).
Sean Dyche has leaned heavily on him this season, with Beto mainly playing a backup role. Sharing his thoughts on X (29 October), Liverpool Echo journalist Croll argued that Everton should keep him through the season, even if it risks losing him for free next summer.
“Letting him go in January would be a huge risk unless someone else steps up,” said Croll. “Despite questions about his scoring, he’s crucial to Dyche’s system.”
Everton lacks depth in the number nine role, so it’s unlikely they would consider parting with him midseason.
It would also not be surprising to see the Friedkin Group, Everton’s ownership, work on renewing the England international’s contract, which expires in 2025.
Since signing from Sheffield United in 2016, he has developed into a proven Premier League player.
Although injuries have hindered his career, he seems to be over those issues and has started in every league match this season.
While his recent goal tally hasn’t been impressive, with only two goals this season, Dyche relies on him as the primary striker.
Beto made an impact with a stoppage-time goal in Everton’s 1-1 draw against Fulham, but the former Udinese player needs to do more to challenge his teammate’s position as Everton’s top striker.
While Everton could risk losing him for nothing next summer, the threat of relegation if he’s sold in January outweighs that risk.
The Toffees need his presence on the field to help ensure their Premier League survival, which could lead to efforts to secure his contract for the longer term.
