Newcastle United may consider offering Harvey Barnes in a swap deal to sign Aston Villa midfielder Jacob Ramsey, according to Mail Sport.
The Magpies reportedly admire Ramsey, and financial pressures at Villa could force the club to sell the 23-year-old this summer.
Ramsey is believed to be open to a move in search of regular first-team football, which he’s lacked under Unai Emery, who has favored other options such as Morgan Rogers and Marco Asensio.
Barnes’ own future at Newcastle is also uncertain. He has struggled for consistent game time at St James’ Park, starting just 14 of 30 Premier League matches this season.
With Anthony Gordon ahead of him in the pecking order, the 27-year-old winger is reportedly being monitored by Villa and several other top-tier clubs ahead of the summer transfer window.
Despite limited starts, Barnes has been a useful squad player for Eddie Howe, notably contributing during key matches like the Carabao Cup final win over Liverpool when Gordon was suspended.
Given his performances and desire for more playing time, a move away could appeal to him.
Villa’s financial constraints have sparked speculation about a potential player-plus-cash deal, with Barnes possibly being used to reduce the cost of signing Ramsey.
Writing in his Newcastle Confidential column, Craig Hope noted:
“The word in the game is that Villa will have to sell at least one. Newcastle like Jacob Ramsey, but could they afford to spend a decent chunk of their budget on a midfielder? I’m not so sure, unless the deal was manufactured in a way to suit all parties.
One to watch, especially amid the Barnes interest.”
Barnes joined Newcastle from Leicester City in a £39 million deal in 2023 and has three years remaining on his contract.
Ramsey, meanwhile, has two years left on his current Villa deal. The midfielder is attracting interest from other Premier League clubs including Arsenal, Manchester City, and Tottenham Hotspur.
Villa are believed to value the 16-cap England U21 international at around £50 million, having once described him as “unbelievable” during his breakthrough season.
