Newcastle United had to cope without Joelinton in their clash against Ipswich Town, as the Brazilian missed out due to a knee injury.

The former Hoffenheim star is currently consulting a specialist after sustaining the knock during last weekend’s 4-1 defeat to Aston Villa.

His absence opened the door for Joe Willock, who was preferred over Sean Longstaff and young Lewis Miley.

Before kick-off, Eddie Howe said: “We’re going to miss Joelinton massively, but Willock has excellent qualities.

We’re excited to see how he performs, and we’re fortunate to have strong options on the bench as well.”

Joelinton, who has featured 39 times this season for club and country, scoring four goals, will be a significant loss for Howe, especially with the head coach only just back in the dugout.

However, there was a major boost for Newcastle, as Sven Botman returned to the squad after a lengthy spell on the sidelines with his own knee problem.

The Dutch defender, formerly of Ajax, last appeared in the Carabao Cup semi-final against Arsenal and is eager to make his comeback.

On the Ipswich side, Liam Delap made his way back into the starting XI following a recent rib injury.

Ahead of the game, Jacob Murphy urged fans to create an intimidating atmosphere at St. James’ Park.
