While John Stones remains a crucial figure at Manchester City, his current deal at the Etihad is set to expire next summer.

Now, former Everton scout Bryan King has outlined how David Moyes could lure the centre-back back to Goodison Park.

King believes that Everton face a difficult task in trying to bring Stones back, as he remains a regular starter for City and could add yet another trophy to his collection this season.

Complicating matters further, Stones currently earns £250,000 per week at the Etihad, meaning he would have to accept a significant wage cut to rejoin Everton.

Speaking exclusively to Goodison News, King explained that a substantial signing-on fee might convince Stones to make the switch.

“I think it would be a good move for him to return to Everton,” King said. “I was involved in bringing him to the club in the first place as one of the scouts who looked at him.

He’s a very smart footballer and could certainly do an excellent job for Moyes again.

“If he’s going to leave Manchester City, he’ll need to accept a pay cut. He won’t earn what he’s on now at Everton, but as a free transfer he could command a very good signing-on fee.”

Stones’ career since leaving Everton

Stones made 95 appearances for Everton in all competitions before joining Manchester City in 2016. Since then, he has enjoyed a glittering career, winning the Premier League six times and establishing himself as one of Europe’s top defenders.

Everton’s current wage structure

According to Capology (as of 11 September), Jordan Pickford is Everton’s highest earner, on £125,000 per week.

Idrissa Gueye and Jarrad Branthwaite follow closely, both taking home £120,000 weekly. Should Pickford agree a contract extension, his salary would likely increase further.

Even with a reduced wage compared to his City deal, Stones would still rank among Everton’s top earners, close to Pickford, Gueye, and Branthwaite.

Combined with a generous signing-on fee, such a package could be enough to tempt the England defender back to Merseyside and reunite him with the club where his Premier League journey began.
