Former QPR Boss Set to Take Over at Leicester City After £500k Compensation Agreement
Leicester City are finalising visa arrangements for incoming manager Marti Cifuentes after reaching a compensation agreement with QPR, according to reports.
The Foxes remain the only club across England’s top four divisions yet to appoint a new manager ahead of the upcoming season, but Cifuentes’ arrival at the King Power Stadium is now imminent.
Sky Sports reports that Leicester and QPR have agreed on a £500,000 compensation package for the Spanish coach.
Although Cifuentes officially departed QPR last month after being placed on gardening leave in April, the terms of his exit still required payment to the club—half of which he is reportedly willing to cover himself.
The only holdup now is Cifuentes’ visa. Leicester are hopeful this will be resolved in time to officially announce his appointment before the squad departs for Austria on Wednesday for a 10-day pre-season training camp, where they are scheduled to play three friendly matches.
It has been 85 days since Leicester were relegated from the Premier League, and just 27 days remain before they begin their Championship campaign against Sheffield Wednesday.
The club’s prolonged managerial search was partly due to complications surrounding Profit and Sustainability Rules, which saw Ruud van Nistelrooy remain in charge until late June.
During that time, several names were linked with the vacancy, including Russell Martin, Sean Dyche, Danny Rohl, Chris Wilder, and Gary O’Neil, before Cifuentes emerged as the leading candidate last week.
Cifuentes brings a wealth of experience, having previously managed in Norway, Denmark, and Sweden before taking over at QPR.
In his debut season at Loftus Road, he guided the club from second-bottom to safety and improved further last season with a 15th-place finish.
