Junior Firpo has reached a milestone for Leeds United that hasn’t been seen in two decades.
The Dominican Republic international recorded his 10th assist of 2024 during Leeds’ recent 3-0 victory over Coventry City.
Firpo set up the opening goal by delivering a perfectly timed cutback across the 18-yard box, allowing Willy Gnonto to fire a first-time shot into the top corner.
Firpo’s assist tally for Leeds this year now stands at 12 if you include his two assists while on international duty.
Remarkably, the 28-year-old is the first Leeds defender since Ian Harte to provide 10 assists in a calendar year.
Harte, a Republic of Ireland international and now football agent, registered 13 assists in 2001, a record Firpo aims to surpass.
In the final year of his contract at Elland Road, Firpo has earned praise from manager Daniel Farke for his leadership and improved performance, particularly after a tough start at the club.
Farke commended Firpo’s mentality earlier this season, noting his development after a difficult summer and his ability to step up following the departure of key players.
Farke stated, “Junior played a really good game against Burnley, showing improved defensive skills and leadership. He has the will to keep improving.”
With 17 games remaining this year, Firpo has ample opportunity to surpass Harte’s record, needing just four more assists to do so.
