Tottenham Hotspur are actively exploring options to replace Fabio Paratici rather than granting Johan Lange complete authority over recruitment, according to a report from The Telegraph.

Despite the club announcing Paratici’s impending departure, the Italian remained involved in Spurs’ recruitment strategy during the January transfer window.

Tottenham confirmed that Paratici would stay on until the conclusion of the winter window before officially leaving to join Serie A outfit Fiorentina at the start of February.

Lange arrived in north London in 2023 after leaving Aston Villa, taking up the role of technical director.

In October, he was promoted into a shared Sporting Director position alongside Paratici.

With Paratici now gone, Spurs are keen to maintain that dual leadership structure rather than placing sole responsibility on Lange.

Tottenham Plan to Replace Paratici

The Telegraph reports that Tottenham’s hierarchy intend to appoint a direct replacement for Paratici, reinforcing their preference for a two-man sporting director model.

The club is understood to be reluctant to centralise recruitment power with Lange alone, particularly following criticism over the club’s limited activity during the January window.

Concerns over Tottenham’s transfer business were amplified by comments from Cristian Romero shortly after the window shut.

The Argentina international appeared to criticise the club on social media, describing it as “disgraceful” that Spurs were left with just 11 senior players available at one stage, a message widely interpreted as frustration over the lack of reinforcements.

Tottenham’s first signing of the window was the acquisition of teenage left-back Souza from Brazilian side Santos.

While viewed as a player for the future, the youngster is not expected to feature heavily in the first team, meaning the move did little to strengthen Thomas Frank’s immediate options.

The arrival of Conor Gallagher was seen as a positive step and provided a much-needed boost to the midfield.

However, Spurs failed to secure a replacement for Brennan Johnson following his departure to Crystal Palace, leaving the squad short in attacking areas.

Lange’s Remarks May Frustrate Supporters

Following the close of the window, Lange addressed the club’s limited business, pointing to the lack of suitable options available during January.

“There were simply not many available players across the whole marketplace during January,” Lange said.

“I saw this as one of the quieter January windows across not only the Premier League, but across football in general.”

While his comments reflect the broader market conditions, they are unlikely to satisfy supporters.

Other clubs still managed to strengthen, and with Tottenham struggling for form, there is a clear sense that additional reinforcements were required to give the team a realistic chance of salvaging their season.
