Newcastle United have maintained an interest in Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah since last summer, when they were exploring ways to navigate Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

That interest hasn’t waned, and with the club keen to recruit a right-sided centre-back during the upcoming transfer window, Quansah remains a name in the mix.

In recent weeks, the Magpies have also been linked with Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi and Bournemouth loanee Dean Huijsen.

While these defenders remain options, Quansah is still being considered, especially if Newcastle decide that Guehi or Huijsen aren’t the right fit.

Although Liverpool are expected to resist any advances for Quansah, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has suggested a deal isn’t entirely off the table.

Romano told Give Me Sport: “It’s a possibility. It’s not Liverpool actively trying to sell him, but the player is attracting interest, particularly from Newcastle and clubs in Germany.”

Quansah featured in the Liverpool team that lost to Newcastle at Wembley in March.

On that occasion, he was played out of position at right-back due to injuries to Conor Bradley and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

He faced a tough challenge against Harvey Barnes, who was in inspired form, and was frequently left exposed as Mohamed Salah didn’t offer much defensive support.

The Magpies’ second goal came from their left side, with Barnes and Tino Livramento linking up before Alexander Isak finished off a Jacob Murphy assist.

Despite Newcastle’s renewed interest, Liverpool’s stance on Quansah remains largely unchanged from last summer, when they swiftly dismissed any possibility of letting the young defender leave.

At the time, Newcastle were under pressure to resolve their PSR concerns and even considered the controversial possibility of selling Anthony Gordon to Liverpool.

As part of those discussions, Quansah was floated as a potential makeweight in a deal involving Gordon.

However, Liverpool’s unwillingness to part with the defender and Newcastle’s ability to raise funds through the sales of Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh ultimately meant that no deal materialised.

According to The Athletic, Liverpool remain reluctant to entertain offers for Quansah, even though he has struggled to secure consistent minutes at centre-back this season.

While the Reds value Quansah as a key part of their long-term plans, Newcastle may still test their resolve.

Whether or not a move comes to fruition could depend on how desperate the Magpies are to reinforce their backline and whether Liverpool’s stance softens during the transfer window.
