Newcastle United had been linked with a potential move for Jonathan David, but the Canadian striker is now on the verge of being unveiled as a marquee signing by Juventus.

The prolific forward had attracted interest from Premier League clubs, including West Ham and Manchester United, and appeared to have multiple options on the table.

However, Newcastle, despite early signs of interest, ultimately opted not to pursue the Lille star further—leaving fans to wonder why a potential marquee signing was allowed to slip away.

At the start of 2025, optimism was high among the Newcastle faithful regarding David’s potential arrival.

Head of recruitment Steve Nickson had been seen scouting in France and was even present at Anfield for Lille’s Champions League clash with Liverpool.

In addition, then-sporting director Paul Mitchell had initiated discussions to sign the Canadian international earlier in the year.

However, those negotiations began to stall during the closing stages of Mitchell’s tenure at the club.

Sources close to the situation indicated that, in the final two months before David’s departure from Lille, the idea of him joining Newcastle became increasingly “unrealistic.”

Newcastle had given encouragement to David’s representatives at one point, with Nickson actively tracking the striker, who notched 31 goals for club and country in the previous season.

Yet, when Serie A giants Juventus and Napoli made their interest concrete with firm offers, Newcastle chose not to enter the race, despite communicating to the player’s camp that they rated him highly.

Mitchell’s departure from the club in late May was seen as a decisive factor by those around David.

It signaled the end of any serious pursuit, especially since Mitchell had reportedly been reluctant to renew the contracts of several senior players, preferring a fresh squad overhaul.

His exit coincided with Newcastle opening talks with veterans like Callum Wilson and John Ruddy—moves that further dampened David’s hopes of a switch to Tyneside.

Interestingly, the financial package offered by Juventus wasn’t beyond Newcastle’s capabilities.

David’s weekly wage of approximately £100,000 fell within their pay structure, although the bonus of £2 million per year and a hefty £8 million agent fee may have raised concerns.

Despite these costs, David represents significant value in the current market. Widely regarded as one of Europe’s top five strikers based on goal output, he has an estimated market value of £50 million and can also operate as a second striker.

Notably, David’s agent was in attendance during Newcastle’s 1-0 win over West Ham in March. Still, by then, the Magpies’ interest had begun to cool, and they ultimately decided to walk away from the deal.
