Keith Jackson suggests Rangers will limit their January transfer activity to just one signing.
Rangers have once again found themselves trailing their arch-rivals Celtic this season, sitting 13 points behind the league leaders.
Adding to their challenges, a defensive injury crisis has left both Leon Balogun and John Souttar sidelined, prompting speculation that Philippe Clement’s side may target a new centre-back in the upcoming winter transfer window.
Discussing this on Daily Record’s Hotline Live (7 January), Jackson shared insights on Rangers’ current predicament and transfer prospects.
“The indications I’m hearing are that unless they can generate unexpected funds by selling a player, they’ll bring in just one signing in January, and it’ll likely be a centre-half,” he said.
He mentioned potential targets, adding, “[Nikola] Katic is being mentioned, as is Jonny Evans, whom Clement and Nils Koppen are reportedly being encouraged to consider.
Personally, I think Katic is the better long-term option compared to a 37-year-old Evans.
However, both could bring some much-needed steel to the Rangers defence.”
Rangers Must Prioritize a Centre-Back in January
Failing to sign a centre-back in January could seriously jeopardize Rangers’ ambitions for the 2024/25 season.
With the campaign already proving difficult for the Ibrox faithful, bringing in reinforcements seems essential to turn things around.
Currently, Evans and Katic are the primary names being linked.
On paper, both appear to be industrious additions who could strengthen the squad.
However, it’s also clear that Clement may need to start planning for a replacement for Robin Propper, whose performances this season have left much to be desired.
This is likely not the scenario Clement envisioned, having already invested in defensive reinforcements during the summer transfer window.
Yet, the current situation leaves the Belgian with little choice but to explore the market for solutions.
Time will tell whether Rangers can address their defensive frailties effectively, but failing to act in January could force them to write off their hopes for the remainder of the season.
Strengthening their backline must now be the top priority if they aim to compete with Celtic and salvage something from this challenging campaign.
