Kelechi Iheanacho expressed “mixed emotions” about his final season at Leicester City as he embarks on a new chapter with Sevilla.
The Nigerian striker concluded a seven-year tenure at Leicester when his contract expired this summer.
Although linked with several Premier League clubs, he opted for a move to La Liga, signing a two-year deal with Sevilla.
Iheanacho’s performance in the Championship didn’t quite meet expectations, partly due to limited opportunities in the latter half of the season. His final start for Leicester was in a 2-1 victory at West Brom in early December.
Reflecting on his last year at the King Power Stadium, Iheanacho acknowledged both personal frustration and team success. He emphasized that he harbors no ill will towards the club.
The 27-year-old remarked, “Last season was one of mixed emotions. I played the first half of the season but didn’t really get a chance in the second part.
But most importantly, as a team, we won the trophy. We were a good group together. We did it for all of us and for the football club.
That was the most important thing. It’s a nice football club and a good family. It was great to end with a smile and a trophy.”
At Sevilla, Iheanacho aims to replace last season’s top scorer, Youssef En-Nesyri, who has moved to Fenerbahce under Jose Mourinho.
He also hopes to help his new team recover from their 14th-placed finish last season, their lowest in over 20 years since returning to Spain’s top tier.
Iheanacho leaves Leicester with 232 appearances and 61 goals, placing him 21st on the club’s all-time scorers list. Notably, with 26 goals across the FA Cup, League Cup, European competitions, and Community Shield, he is Leicester’s highest-ever cup goalscorer.
