David Ornstein: American Signs New Everton Takeover Agreement with Farhad Moshiri

The Athletic journalist reported on X on Thursday (15 August) that American businessman John Textor has signed agreements with Everton and their current owner as he seeks to pursue a potential takeover.

Whether Textor can complete his acquisition of Farhad Moshiri’s controlling stake at Goodison Park depends on various factors, including his current stake in Premier League rivals Crystal Palace.

Despite Ornstein’s update, a spokesperson for Moshiri declined to comment on the developments at Goodison Park when asked by The Athletic.

Everton supporters shouldn’t get too excited yet, as they have experienced similar situations over the past few seasons at Goodison Park.

Whether it’s been with the Friedkin Group or 777 Partners, Moshiri has entered periods of exclusivity with multiple parties, none of which have resulted in a completed takeover. Perhaps this time will be different.

While this is a significant step in the right direction, much work remains to be done in the coming weeks for the deal to be completed. This will include Textor overcoming several hurdles.

First, he must find someone willing to acquire his 45 percent stake at Selhurst Park, as the Premier League does not allow one party to hold ownership stakes in two different clubs.

Even after that, there’s the matter of paying back the hundreds of millions of pounds in loans the Toffees owe to various companies.

Only when all these conditions are met can the American finally replace Moshiri. While this update is positive, a change of ownership is still a long way off for the blue half of Merseyside.
