Kyle Walker-Peters Transfer Update: West Ham United Progress as Southampton Deal Reached
West Ham United continue negotiations to sign Kyle Walker-Peters from Southampton, following an agreement for Flynn Downes, reports Sky Sports.
Dharmesh Sheth reported on July 15 at 16:12 that negotiations are “ongoing” with West Ham United keen to sign a new right-back.
A potential swap deal, where West Ham would pay £10m and send Flynn Downes to Southampton for Kyle Walker-Peters, was initially considered [talkSPORT, July 10]. However, Southampton has since agreed on a separate £18m deal for Downes [Dharmesh Sheth, July 15].
West Ham United is preparing to transfer a new right-back as the squad needs rebuilding this summer, with several players either aging or not fitting into the manager’s plans.
The defense, in particular, is a focus area. Max Kilman has already been signed from Wolves, amid uncertainties surrounding the futures of Kurt Zouma and Nayef Aguerd. Additionally, Ben Johnson’s move to Ipswich [The Times, June 26] and doubts about Vladimir Coufal’s future at the London Stadium [Athletic, April 27] mean that full-back is another critical area that needs addressing.
Walker-Peters would be an ideal signing given his Premier League experience and versatility to play on both sides. However, Southampton will want to retain him for their return to the division, making a deal challenging.
Despite this, there is still plenty of time, and relations between the clubs are positive, so a deal remains possible, although Downes is no longer part of the equation.
