Ledley King Identifies ‘Fantastic’ Tottenham Defender with Potential for an Attacking Role

Tottenham fans haven’t had much to celebrate this season.

A disappointing Premier League campaign, coupled with early exits in domestic cup competitions, has left the Europa League as their only remaining hope.

However, one bright spot has emerged—Djed Spence. Initially written off by many, Spence has stepped up impressively at left-back in Destiny Udogie’s absence due to a hamstring injury.

This season, Spence has made 23 appearances across all competitions for Spurs, gaining the trust of Ange Postecoglou.

His impact extends beyond his two goals and two assists—his defensive solidity and attacking contributions have been crucial.

His performances haven’t gone unnoticed, earning him a nomination for the Premier League Player of the Month award in February.

Ledley King Backs Spence for an Attacking Role

Former Spurs defender Ledley King, who played alongside elite talents like Gareth Bale, believes Spence has the qualities to transition into a more attacking position.

Speaking to SpursPLAY, King said: “Defensively, he’s very difficult to beat in one-on-one situations.

His energy and dynamism make him a constant attacking threat. He’s been fantastic, especially considering the difficult circumstances he’s faced.”

When asked about Spence’s technical ability, King added: “He looks like someone who could play further forward.

That’s how good he is going forward. I was delighted to see him get his first goal—he absolutely deserved it.”

Spence Overlooked for England Call-Up

Despite his strong form for Spurs, Spence has been left out of Thomas Tuchel’s first England squad.

Instead, Arsenal youngster Myles Lewis-Skelly received a debut call-up, while experienced right-back Kyle Walker was also preferred.

Spence has already demonstrated his versatility, playing on both the left and right flanks, yet this hasn’t been enough to earn him a place in the national team.

However, if he continues proving himself as an attacking option, more opportunities could open up for him.

Given his recent performances, there’s every reason to believe he could thrive in a more advanced role.
