Leeds set to make ‘lucrative’ offer for last-minute signing – report
Leeds United are preparing a “lucrative” late bid to sign Dejan Ljubicic from FC Köln, according to Rheinische Post.
The German newspaper reported on Monday (26 August, page B3) that it is uncertain whether the 26-year-old Austrian midfielder will stay at Cologne after scoring twice in Sunday’s 5-0 victory over Braunschweig.
Leeds United are reportedly prepared to make a significant offer for Ljubicic, but Cologne’s managing director Christian Keller has declined to comment on the matter.
“It is normal for rumors to circulate at the end of a transfer window,” Keller stated.
Leeds United’s Urgent Need for New Signings
The summer transfer window has been active at Elland Road, yet the club has faced issues with high-profile departures and the failure to adequately reinvest the substantial funds received.
Leeds have sold Archie Gray, Glen Kamara, Crysencio Summerville, and Georginio Rutter for over £100 million.
Despite this, they have not made significant purchases to replenish the squad.
With just one win in four games so far this season, it’s clear that the summer transfer period has not met expectations.
Manager Daniel Farke has had to rely on young Mateo Joseph to lead the attack.
While Joseph performed well against Sheffield Wednesday, a weaker team, his effectiveness against stronger opponents like West Brom has been limited.
Leeds urgently need a striker and ideally a new playmaker before the transfer window closes. Ljubicic, however, does not fit these requirements.
This season, Ljubicic has played on the right wing, though he is typically a defensive midfielder.
While Leeds could use additional coverage in midfield, their immediate priority should be addressing their attacking needs.
