Leeds United have reportedly set their sights on a “world-class” goalkeeper to succeed Illan Meslier, with manager Daniel Farke now willing to approve the Frenchman’s exit, according to a recent report.

Leeds prepare to move on from Meslier

Earlier this year, in February, former Leeds goalkeeper Paul Robinson commended Farke’s handling of Meslier, describing him as a confidence-based player who had been well-managed: “He’s a confidence goalkeeper and the manager has been excellent with him. That’s one thing you can ask for as a goalkeeper.”

Despite this, Farke’s faith in the 25-year-old appears to have waned. Karl Darlow was preferred in goal during the crucial final stages of the season, suggesting a breakdown in trust that may have further impacted Meslier’s already fragile confidence.

Meslier’s mistakes reportedly cost the team 10 points last season, and continuing with him as first choice could be considered a significant gamble.

TEAMtalk now reports that Farke is open to selling Meslier in the upcoming summer window. In preparation, Leeds have already lined up a potential successor: Chelsea’s Djordje Petrovic.

The Blues are believed to be willing to part ways with the Serbian international for a fee of around £25 million, having placed him on the transfer list.

Leeds have expressed interest in the 24-year-old but face stiff competition. Premier League rivals such as Aston Villa, Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Brentford are all monitoring the situation, along with several top European clubs.

Despite the intense interest, Leeds—recent Championship winners—are reportedly prepared to push hard to secure the signing, even if it means going head-to-head with heavyweights like Juventus and Bayer Leverkusen.

Petrovic emerges as a strong candidate

Given the circumstances, it makes sense that Farke would be willing to cash in on Meslier, and Petrovic appears to be a fitting replacement. His performances while on loan at Strasbourg last season were highly rated.

Liam Rosenior, the manager who oversaw his progress, offered glowing praise: “We have seen huge progress from Petro. He is a world-class goalkeeper. We see it every day and it is still paying off today.”

While labelling the former New England Revolution keeper “world-class” might seem ambitious, Rosenior’s comments are backed by strong data—Petrovic’s save percentage over the past year ranks among the best.

That Chelsea are willing to sell him may come as a surprise, but their decision could prove to be a significant opportunity for Leeds.

If they can secure his signature, it might mark a decisive upgrade in goal as they look to solidify their squad for the Premier League.
