The Athletic reports: Leeds interested in acquiring £5,500-per-week “machine” who stirred controversy at Elland Road last season

Leeds United are pursuing a player who caused them significant trouble last season as they seek to strengthen their squad this summer.

Summerville Likely to Depart

After Leeds United’s narrow 1-0 defeat to Southampton in the Championship play-off final last month, the future of winger Crysencio Summerville appears uncertain. Named the Championship’s Player of the Season, Summerville has attracted significant interest from Premier League clubs. With Leeds needing to generate funds, he is almost certain to leave this summer to aid the club’s finances and advance his burgeoning career.

Additionally, there is concern over the future of fellow winger Wilfried Gnonto, who has also been linked with a move away. His departure could leave Leeds facing a significant overhaul in their wide positions. However, Leeds may have already identified a potential solution.

Leeds Target New Winger

Leeds United are reportedly keen on bringing Liam Millar back to the Championship next season. Millar, who spent the last season on loan at Preston North End, made an immediate impact. Described as a “machine” by teammate Milutin Osmajic, Millar was praised by his peers for his performances. He notably troubled Leeds, scoring in the home fixture at Deepdale and earning the label “unbelievable” from captain Archie Brown.

In the reverse fixture at Elland Road, Millar provided an early assist and celebrated provocatively in front of the home fans, although Preston ultimately lost 2-1. Across the season, Millar delivered five goals and five assists in his debut Championship season.

Millar is entering the final year of his contract with Basel, where he earns £5.5k per week. According to The Athletic, as reported by Leeds All Over, his contract includes a release clause, though the exact amount is undisclosed. Given his contract situation and the existence of the release clause, it is almost certain that he will leave Basel this summer. Leeds are among the clubs interested in securing his services.

Currently, Millar is with former Leeds coach Jesse Marsch at the Copa America, so any move is unlikely before the tournament’s conclusion. Having already impressed in the Championship, Millar could be an excellent addition to Leeds’ squad if they can finalize his signing.
