Cody Drameh Departs Leeds United Despite Contract Offer, Set for a Better Future at Another Club with More Opportunities
Leeds United’s track record with U21 signings has been mixed in recent years, with the club hoping to save money by promoting players from within. Among their initial U21 recruits, only Crysencio Summerville has shown notable success.
Recently, Leeds offered right-back Cody Drameh a new contract following his relegation with Birmingham City. However, the main reason for this offer seems to be securing training compensation rather than expecting Drameh to sign a new deal. This move ensures that if Drameh transfers to another club, Leeds will still receive compensation.
As of mid-July, Drameh appears to be leaving Leeds, having had limited opportunities to showcase his abilities in the first team after three loan spells away from Elland Road. Marcelo Bielsa had to use him in a few games during the 2021/22 season, but Jesse Marsch did not offer him much playing time, despite acknowledging his positive attitude in training.
Daniel Farke’s handling of Drameh was also problematic. He was used out of position in a difficult match against Ipswich Town, leading to a costly mistake and subsequent loan to Birmingham. Unfortunately, Birmingham’s poor managerial decisions led to their relegation, making it Drameh’s first unsuccessful loan stint.
Despite these setbacks, Drameh performed steadily at Birmingham last season, contributing three assists and accumulating a total of eight assists across his loan spells, including standout seasons at Cardiff City (where he was named Player of the Season) and Luton Town (where he helped secure promotion).
Drameh’s strong performances in the Championship highlight his potential value. Leeds’ handling of his situation has left them short of depth at right-back. Farke urgently needs to invest in a right-back to provide cover for his preferred choice.
In an ideal scenario, Drameh could have been a valuable asset for Leeds, adding depth to their squad. However, he is now seeking a new club where he can better demonstrate his capabilities and secure a regular place in the team.
