Leeds’ promotion chase in the Championship demands a strong start after last August’s debacle, and for that, Daniel Farke needs all his players fully committed.
Currently, this appears to be the case, as a strong Leeds side defeated Hannover 96 in a friendly on Wednesday.
Earlier in the summer, it was revealed that Junior Firpo was set to be named in the Dominican Republic’s final squad for the Olympics, following his debut for the country in June, playing a more attacking role.
However, it has now been confirmed that Leeds have not granted Firpo permission to participate in the tournament.
The Olympics does not fall within the FIFA calendar, allowing clubs to veto their players’ involvement, as Leeds previously did with Mateo Joseph. Firpo, who started at left-back against Hannover, appears displeased with being blocked from representing his country of birth.
On Instagram, he shared his feelings about the decision:
“I tried in every way given the excitement that made me live this experience and represent my country in such an important and unique event. But at the end of the day, you have to respect the decision of the club I represent.
“I wanted to thank the coach and his coaching staff for having waited for me until the last moment and wish my teammates all the luck in the world. I will be cheering from home like anyone else.”
Post-match, Farke commented on the shortage of full-back options, making it unfeasible to let another player leave. Firpo is crucial to Leeds’ attacking build-up, so allowing him to play in the Olympics was never an option.
