Leeds United set to finalize transfer deal for Sheffield United player
Leeds United near signing Jayden Bogle from Sheffield United, concluding their search for a right-back post-Archie Gray's exit.
Earlier this month, the Whites sold their talented teenager to Spurs in a £40 million deal. This move alleviated their PSR concerns but also weakened Daniel Farke’s team.
Since Gray’s exit, there has been a focus on acquiring a new right-back, with Bogle emerging as the prime target over the past week.
In a recent update, the Sheffield Star reported that a move is nearing completion, with Bogle expected to miss the Blades’ friendly against Chesterfield on Saturday.
The report states that Leeds have remained in discussions with their Championship rivals after their initial bid was rejected, and there is now an expectation that a deal will be reached.
With this in mind, Bogle is likely to make the short trip to Leeds to finalize the move.
The fee for the deal has not been specified, but previous claims indicated that Sheffield United were seeking around £7 million for the player. Bogle joined Bramall Lane from Derby County in 2020 and has since made over 100 appearances in red-and-white.
Sheffield United fans will be disappointed to lose a player who has proven himself in the Championship, especially to a local and promotion rival.
However, there is some sympathy for the club, as Bogle is entering the final year of his contract. Without cashing in now, they risk losing him for free in 12 months’ time.
Some might argue that Bogle’s contract should have been extended earlier, which is a valid point. Nonetheless, the club had to consider suitable offers at this stage.
This sale will provide Chris Wilder with funds to strengthen the squad, though finding a right-back of Bogle’s caliber at this level will be challenging.
From Leeds’ perspective, this seems like a savvy piece of business. Bogle’s contract situation means they are unlikely to overpay.
After losing Gray, acquiring a right-back became a priority. Bogle, who has proven himself in the Championship and has Premier League experience, fits the bill.
Importantly, Bogle’s energy and drive down the flank suit Farke’s style. He should thrive in a Leeds team that plays on the front foot and attacks.
If the transfer goes through, Bogle’s first league game for Leeds could be against Portsmouth at Elland Road on August 10. He will likely receive a warm reception from the away end when Leeds host Sheffield United in October.
