An article in The Athletic revealed that Watkins was a potential signing for Leeds after their promotion in 2020 under Marcelo Bielsa.
Following their Championship triumph, there was a strong belief that Leeds would target the best players from the division to strengthen their squad for the Premier League. Notable names in the Championship at that time included Watkins, Michael Olise, Said Benrahma, Ebere Eze, Antonee Robinson, and Jude Bellingham. However, Leeds did not secure any of these talents.

There was an early recruitment plan to bring the best talent from the division to the Premier League. Watkins, now England’s Euro 2024 semi-final hero, was on that list along with then-Brentford teammate Said Benrahma.”
Ultimately, Leeds opted to spend a club-record £27 million on Spanish international Rodrigo, while Watkins moved to Aston Villa for slightly more. The difference in their striker fortunes since then is evident. Rodrigo has shown flashes of brilliance and earned fans’ admiration, but he has not consistently displayed the qualities needed to lead a Premier League attack.
Leeds’ then-director of football, Victor Orta, focused on signing players from the continent, a strategy that has had lasting repercussions. The club is still paying off a £190 million bill and has faced relegation twice, illustrating the risks of their recruitment approach.
