Leeds Supporters Critical of Transfer Approach Compared to Newly-Promoted Clubs
Sunderland have shown bold ambition in the transfer market, spending £100 million and outmanoeuvring Leeds United for several key targets.
One major coup was the signing of Habib Diarra for £30 million — a deal Leeds hesitated to complete.
The Black Cats also secured the signature of Noah Sadiki, another player Leeds had been closely monitoring.
Sadiki later confirmed he held talks with Leeds before deciding on Sunderland. “I only spoke with Sunderland, Frankfurt, and Leeds, who also made an offer,” he explained.
“Choosing Sunderland is a personal challenge. I want to experience the Premier League and test myself against top teams.”
While Sunderland press ahead, Leeds fans remain concerned about the club’s transfer activity. Despite the arrival of Lukas Nmecha, there’s a strong consensus that another striker is urgently needed.
Joel Piroe was one of the few consistent options up front last season, while Patrick Bamford struggled with injuries.
Manager Daniel Farke has yet to fully back promising youngster Mateo Joseph, leaving the squad light in that position.
Adding fuel to the striker conversation, veteran commentator Ian Darke recently proposed a surprising target for Leeds — Alexander Sørloth.
The Norwegian international, who currently plays for Atletico Madrid, has caught attention after a strong season.
Darke floated the idea during a discussion about potential striker movements:
“Maybe Newcastle or Leeds — say Newcastle lost Isak — it wouldn’t be the worst idea,” he said. “Sørloth is on good money at Atletico and playing in the Champions League, but with the spending power in the Premier League, I’m surprised more clubs aren’t looking at him.”
Realistically, landing Sørloth would be a long shot. The striker is competing at the highest level with Atletico and has no pressing need to move.
However, as Leeds fans know, the unexpected can happen — just as it did in 2020 when the club signed Raphinha from Lille and Rodrigo Moreno from Valencia.
While a move for Sørloth may seem unlikely now, Leeds’ track record of pulling off surprise signings leaves the door slightly open for another bold transfer swing this summer.
