Lopetegui’s absurd experiment with West Ham’s £15m star has flopped spectacularly and needs to end immediately.

West Ham United’s victory over Manchester United at the London Stadium on Sunday highlighted the challenges the team has faced recently.

Julen Lopetegui desperately needed this win against Man United, but his initial team selection raised some eyebrows.

Credit must be given for the three changes he made at half-time, which significantly influenced the match and ultimately led to a deserved 2-1 victory.

However, several players delivered disappointing performances, particularly Carlos Soler and the struggling Lucas Paqueta.

Many individuals are currently not performing at the required level.

On a positive note, Lopetegui seems to have gained clarity on his best lineup. It has also become apparent that he has mismanaged one of the team’s standout players.

Lopetegui’s experiment with Aaron Wan-Bissaka, signed for £15 million from Manchester United, has not yielded the expected results.

The right-back showcased his talent during the second half against his former team, proving to be a significant asset. Yet, his transition to the London Stadium has not been entirely smooth.

Despite Wan-Bissaka’s undeniable quality, he has not been utilized effectively until the second half against Man United.

The former Crystal Palace player is arguably the best one-on-one defender in the Premier League, yet Lopetegui has deployed him high up the pitch, almost as a right winger at times.

This positioning does not play to Wan-Bissaka’s strengths.

Going forward is not Wan-Bissaka’s forte; he excels as a tackler, possesses remarkable recovery speed, and is extremely difficult to dribble past.

However, when he ventures into the final third, he often appears out of his depth.

Moreover, when the team loses possession during transitions, he finds himself stranded far from his defensive duties.

It’s clear now that Lopetegui must abandon the approach of using Wan-Bissaka as an attacking full-back or wing-back.

Instead, the South London native should revert to a traditional defensive right-back role.

If Lopetegui seeks a more offensive, creative right-back, it raises the question of why he signed Wan-Bissaka in the first place.
