West Ham’s Midfield Overhaul Underway as Potter and Macaulay Lead Rebuild

Midfield has emerged as the top priority for West Ham United’s summer rebuild, with new manager Graham Potter and recruitment expert Kyle Macaulay leading the charge to refresh the squad.

West Ham currently have the oldest squad in the Premier League, with an average age close to 29, and Potter is determined to reduce both its size and age to foster stronger team spirit and increase game time for key players.

Since joining the club, Potter has brought in long-time collaborator Macaulay from Chelsea for £1.2 million.

He has been a key figure for Genoa over the past three seasons and currently ranks as their fourth-best player. With 175 ball recoveries, Frendrup leads all outfield players in Serie A in this metric.

Talks are reportedly underway, and Maxwel Cornet could be used in a swap deal, especially as Genoa manager Patrick Vieira is keen to retain Cornet permanently after a promising loan spell.

Alongside Frendrup, West Ham are also pursuing Mamady Diambou from Red Bull Salzburg.

The 22-year-old Malian midfielder is valued for his versatility, being able to play as a defensive midfielder, winger, or in central roles similar to former Hammer Declan Rice.

Comfortable on the ball and strong in duels, Diambou represents the type of player Potter wants: young, energetic, and adaptable.

Negotiations for Diambou are progressing, with a deal believed to be in the region of £5 million.
