Fabrizio Romano Clarifies Everton’s Position on Branthwaite Following Deal for His Replacement

Fabrizio Romano has updated Manchester United’s pursuit of Jarrad Branthwaite, clarifying that the potential transfer to Old Trafford is not influenced by Everton’s imminent acquisition of Jake O’Brien.

Manchester United had targeted Branthwaite as a key priority this summer to strengthen Erik ten Hag’s defensive lineup.

Despite making two offers, the most recent being around £50 million, Everton has rejected both. The club is holding out for £70 million, a figure Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS are unwilling to meet.

At £70 million, Branthwaite would become the fourth most expensive defender in history, following Harry Maguire, Josko Gvardiol, and Virgil van Dijk.

Earlier this month, David Ornstein reported that Everton informed United they would not entertain any further bids for Branthwaite.

After selling Amadou Onana to Everton, Sean Dyche’s team aims to keep Branthwaite to avoid a relegation struggle next season.

According to a recent report by The Peoples Person, Branthwaite is interested in a move to United, but would only consider a new Everton contract if they match the £160,000 per week offer from United.

There was speculation that Everton might soften their stance after closing in on Lyon centre-back Jake O’Brien.

Some believed O’Brien’s arrival could open the door for United to secure Branthwaite. However, Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that the two transfers are unrelated.

Romano stated in his daily briefing, “I don’t have any new information on Jarrad Branthwaite. There are no ongoing negotiations following two rejected bids from Manchester United.”

He continued, “Everton insists on a £70 million fee, which Manchester United will not pay. The only way to revive the deal is if Everton lowers their asking price, but they are not planning to do so at the moment.”

Romano also noted, “The Jake O’Brien deal does not necessarily indicate that Branthwaite will be leaving, despite some speculation suggesting he could be a replacement.”

Branthwaite has returned to training with Everton but has yet to appear in any of their pre-season friendlies.
