Newport boss praises Leicester loanee Sammy Braybrooke ahead of Bristol Rovers clash
Sammy Braybrooke could make his Newport County debut this weekend, with Leicester City’s midfielder already drawing high praise from manager David Hughes, who described him as “technically outstanding.”
Braybrooke, along with City striker Nathan Opoku, joined the Exiles on half-season loans on deadline day and both are in contention to face Bristol Rovers on Saturday.
The 21-year-old spent part of last season on loan at Dundee, and now has another opportunity to test himself in senior football.
Hughes believes Braybrooke has the qualities to establish himself at Rodney Parade and aid his long-term progress toward Leicester’s first team.
“Sammy is an outstanding footballer, tenacious and technically gifted,” Hughes said. “You don’t play for England at the youth levels he has without real ability.
We tracked him for a while, watched his games at Dundee, and saw his tenacity to cope with men’s football.
“He’s fitted in well, he’s humble, grounded, and knows what’s expected here. He can pick a pass, carry the ball, deliver dangerous set pieces, and he competes strongly. He’s comfortable under pressure too.
We won’t put too much pressure on him yet, but he’s trained well all week—let’s see what happens at kick-off.”
Opoku is also targeting his debut after overcoming a serious injury. The 24-year-old striker broke his leg during the final stages of an 18-month loan at OH Leuven, sidelining him for a year.
Having now returned to full fitness, he is eager to make an impact at Newport.
Braybrooke and Opoku are part of a wider loan strategy at Leicester, with eight players currently out gaining experience. Senior stars Bilal El Khannouss (Stuttgart), Woyo Coulibaly (Sassuolo), and Will Alves (Huddersfield) are among them.
Academy talents Tom Wilson-Brown (Swindon), Henry Cartwright (Falkirk), and Jayden Joseph (Tranmere) have also been sent out to develop their games.
For Braybrooke, Newport offers another step in his journey, with early signs suggesting he has both the technical ability and mindset to thrive in men’s football.
