Wilfred Ndidi’s potential departure to Besiktas could pave the way for Leicester City to make their first outfield signing of the summer transfer window.

The Turkish side are reportedly prepared to activate the £9 million release clause in the Nigerian midfielder’s contract, making him a strong candidate to leave the King Power Stadium—particularly if he’s not part of Marti Cifuentes’ plans for the season ahead.

Several players who featured in Sunday’s final pre-season friendly, including Mads Hermansen, Boubakary Soumare, and Bilal El Khannouss, are also not expected to remain at the club by the time the transfer window closes.

While Ndidi was named in the squad for the clash with Fiorentina, he didn’t get off the bench, casting further doubt over his future.

Cifuentes is currently working with a bloated squad, and the club’s policy remains clear: no new signings will be made until players are sold—though an exception may be made for a striker.

Not every outgoing player requires a direct replacement. For example, Conor Coady’s move to Wrexham hasn’t prompted a search for a new centre-back, as Cifuentes still has four reliable options in that position and has spoken positively about the “really high level” of the group.

However, the midfield situation is far more delicate. Against Fiorentina, Soumare and Luke Thomas were the only outfield players to complete the full 90 minutes—highlighting a lack of depth in deeper midfield roles.

Soumare started alongside Oliver Skipp, with Harry Winks coming on as a second-half substitute. That trio may not provide sufficient cover for the upcoming campaign.

While Hamza Choudhury is a possible option, he appears more likely to be used at right-back under Cifuentes.

Promising youngster Louis Page has been deployed in more advanced midfield roles with the senior team, despite previously playing deeper for both City’s Under-21s and England’s Under-17s.

Given this, Ndidi’s likely departure would almost certainly lead Leicester into the market for a replacement. One name linked is free agent Josh Brownhill, who recently left Burnley after rejecting a new deal.

The 29-year-old scored 18 Championship goals last season and is also attracting interest from Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic.
