Leicester City have confirmed their first piece of business this summer, with 20-year-old midfielder Henry Cartwright joining newly-promoted Scottish Premiership side Falkirk on a season-long loan.

Cartwright, who has impressed as a consistent performer for Leicester’s Under-21 side, will get his first taste of senior football with the Bairns.

The loan marks the club’s first formal outgoing deal of the window, with more expected in the coming weeks.

Falkirk are returning to the Scottish top flight for the first time in 15 years after back-to-back promotions. Interestingly, Cartwright almost joined them during their Championship-winning campaign.

Falkirk CEO Jamie Swinney revealed the club had been tracking him for a while and came close to completing a deal in January.

“Henry is someone we’ve monitored for a long time,” Swinney said. “We were close to signing him earlier this year.

He’s got all the qualities we need, and we’re grateful to Leicester City for trusting us with his development.”

Falkirk manager John McGlynn echoed Swinney’s excitement, highlighting Cartwright’s qualities and the role he will play.

“Henry is a central midfielder who plays with intensity, wins the ball, and can pass it effectively to keep us on the front foot,” McGlynn said. “He brings a different dimension to our midfield.

He’s got the grit and determination we’ll need in what will be a far more physical league this season.

“He’ll take care of the defensive responsibilities in midfield—something we haven’t focused on as much over the last three seasons. We’re confident he’ll adapt well.”

McGlynn also expressed appreciation to Leicester and Cartwright’s representatives: “A big thank you to Jon Rudkin at Leicester and to Henry’s agency, SMI World, for facilitating this deal.”

Cartwright has been a regular for Leicester’s U21s over the past two campaigns. Last season, he missed just one Premier League 2 fixture, captained the side in the closing stages, and scored five goals—including one in their 5-3 extra-time defeat to Southampton in the play-offs.

Though he is yet to make his senior debut for Leicester, he was part of the matchday squad in the Premier League clash against Newcastle last December.

Cartwright will aim for a more successful stint in Scotland than two of his Leicester teammates.

Sammy Braybrooke struggled for minutes at Dundee and was recalled, while Tom Wilson-Brown didn’t feature for Kilmarnock after his January switch.
