Rangers Eye Free-Kick Specialist John Swift as Summer Recruitment Drive Continues
Glasgow Rangers are targeting free agent John Swift as part of their ongoing summer recruitment under new manager Russell Martin.
It has already been a hectic week at Ibrox, with the club and new owners 49ers Enterprises securing the signings of Joe Rothwell and Emmanuel Fernandez on permanent deals.
Rothwell, who previously played under Martin during Southampton’s successful Championship promotion campaign, joined from Bournemouth.
Hours later, Fernandez was confirmed as a Rangers player following his move from Peterborough United.
Speaking on the arrival of Fernandez, Martin said:
“Emmanuel is a young defender with a huge amount of potential, and I am excited to welcome him to the club.
He has a strong physical presence, is a commanding defender and I believe in this environment we can help him develop and provide him with the opportunities to take his game to the next level.”
These additions follow earlier deals for Lyall Cameron and Max Aarons, all of whom bolster the squad ahead of Rangers’ upcoming Champions League qualifier against Panathinaikos later this month. More arrivals are expected before the end of July.
Leicester City defender Conor Coady and Luton Town midfielder Thelo Aasgaard are both reportedly close to joining the Gers, while Martin also has his sights set on other players with experience in English football.
Among them is John Swift, who is now a free agent after departing West Bromwich Albion at the end of June.
As reported by SportsBoom, Rangers are interested in securing Swift’s signature, although they face competition from Championship sides Derby County, Norwich City, Portsmouth, and Stoke City.
Swift, known for his set-piece prowess, began his career at Chelsea but made his name at Reading and West Brom.
Now 30, he has yet to play outside England, so a potential move to Scotland would mark a new chapter in his career.
Swift’s technical ability and eye for goal have not gone unnoticed. Former West Brom manager Tony Mowbray previously praised the midfielder, saying:
“So it shouldn’t be a surprise to anybody that John Swift can bend one in the top corner from 25 yards. He is a wonderful player and that is why he has been in the team.”
Former Reading boss Veljko Paunovic also commended Swift’s qualities:
“Swift is super talented – he showed urgency and wanted to decide the game. It was fantastic execution and vision to play Joao in.
Injuries were the main issue for Swift in the past and he has been missed. It’s important to keep him healthy and motivated like he is now.”
With Rangers pushing to strengthen ahead of their European campaign, Swift could prove a smart addition to Russell Martin’s project.
