Descriptions like “throwing is more of a chore than a talent,” “lacks quickness,” “a scrappy runner but not dynamic,” and “shies away from tight throws” painted a picture of a player who fell short by the sport’s rigorous standards.
Yet, Kyle Shanahan of the San Francisco 49ers, renowned for his offensive prowess in the NFL, saw potential in Purdy’s college tape. Consequently, Purdy was chosen with the 262nd and final pick of the draft, a position typically tagged with the nickname “Mr. Irrelevant” and often mocked on social media.
Arriving at the 49ers’ summer training camp, Purdy’s chances of making the roster seemed slim. As the fourth-choice quarterback in a league where most teams only carry three, there were doubts about his future. However, against the odds, he not only secured a spot but also led the team to seven consecutive wins in his rookie season after injuries sidelined the starters Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo.

While critics argue that Purdy’s success is circumstantial and credit should be given to the team’s stellar offensive players, such as Christian McCaffrey and Deebo Samuel, Purdy’s abilities shouldn’t be discounted.
