Belgian reports indicate Wout Faes may still pursue a transfer after being dropped from the national squad to boost his chances of securing a move.
The transfer window may have officially shut in England, but the story at Leicester City could still have further twists, with several overseas markets yet to close.
While City themselves are restricted to signing only free agents, they remain free to sanction outgoings, and speculation continues to swirl around Wout Faes.
The Belgian defender missed out on a deadline-day move, yet reports suggest he may still be pushing for an exit.
Faes’ situation has drawn attention after he was omitted from the Belgium national squad for the first time in nearly three years.
His limited game time in the Championship, where he has only featured as a substitute in each of Leicester’s four league fixtures under new boss Marti Cifuentes, has further fuelled uncertainty.
With this year being a World Cup year, Belgium manager Rudi Garcia encouraged Faes to secure a transfer, commenting: “He will have to change. We hope that he will play again for a good club and that he can apply for a future position with us.”
Cifuentes, however, defended Leicester’s stance, responding: “I have full respect for whatever other managers are saying. What I know is that Leicester is a very good club.”
Although interest from Wolfsburg and Lille failed to materialise into a late move, Belgian outlet Le Soir reported that an exit remains possible due to open transfer markets abroad.
Countries such as Greece, Switzerland, and Saudi Arabia can still complete deals, while the Belgian window remains open until next Monday.
Turkey’s window may prove most decisive for Faes. The 27-year-old has been previously linked to Besiktas, with Turkish clubs allowed to sign players until September 11.
However, Besiktas’ recent exit from European competition and the subsequent sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could complicate matters.
For Leicester, the main obstacle is that reinforcements are difficult to source, with only unattached players available. Whether a replacement is truly necessary is debatable, though.
Ben Nelson provides cover for first-choice pairing Caleb Okoli and Jannik Vestergaard, while Harry Souttar is on track to return from injury around October or November.
In addition, youngster Bade Aluko has impressed in early pre-season outings, giving Cifuentes another option should Faes depart.
For now, Leicester’s defensive picture remains fluid, with Faes’ future hinging on interest from abroad and the club’s willingness to gamble on their current squad depth.
