Newcastle United Players ‘Upset’ After Being Dropped, Bruno Guimaraes Situation Clarified

Eddie Howe acknowledged that some players were “upset” after being excluded from the starting lineup in Newcastle’s 1-0 win over Southampton, with Bruno Guimaraes among those disappointed.

Bruno, visibly frustrated after being substituted, later posted on social media, seemingly hinting at the possibility of being dropped for the next match.

In his post-match press conference, Howe stressed that no player’s place in the team is guaranteed and that players who are upset should respond by proving they are worthy of staying in the lineup.

Howe explained, “It’s a tough team to get into right now. We’ve won 10 of our last 11 matches, which means some very good players are not starting, and naturally, they’re frustrated.

Bruno didn’t want to come off today, but he had been feeling ill earlier in the week, and we decided it was best to manage him, so he’s available next week. When you get your chance, you have to perform well.”

Another key player left out was Sven Botman, who was replaced by Dan Burn and Fabian Schar in the starting XI.

Howe emphasized that the response to being left out should be to play well when given the opportunity.

“The main message to everyone in the squad is when you’re upset, and you get a chance on the pitch, you have to play well,” he said.

On a positive note, Howe was full of praise for Sandro Tonali, who delivered a standout performance in the win.

Howe described Tonali as “magnificent” and lauded his all-around game, particularly his ball-winning ability.

“That’s exactly what we want from him, and he did it superbly today,” Howe added.

Tonali’s contribution was capped off by a well-taken goal, which highlighted his athleticism.

Howe expressed his delight, stating, “Sandro has become such an important player for us in a short time.

I can’t praise him enough for his performance today.”
